The Literary Memorial House Museum of Taras Shevchenko is one of the three museums in Kyiv that are devoted to the prominent Ukrainian poet, dramaturge, painter, and political and social figure. Its authentic exposition tells about Shevchenko's period of life that he spent in Kyiv and in particular about the years 1846-1847, up to poet's arrest on the case of Cyril and Methodius Brotherhood, the secrete political organization, whose active member he was.

The memorial museum is situated in Kyiv's very heart, near the Maidan Nezalezhnosti, in the one-story house that is considered to be rarity of Kyiv building dated to the early 19th century. It was built in 1835 on the street, formerly called Kozye Boloto, and belonged to collegiate secretary Ivan Zhitnitsky who gave Taras Shevchenko recommendations for admission to the Academy of Arts. The poet settled here in the spring of 1846, having occupied a small room with windows overlooking the street, and a studio in the attic.

After the revolution of 1917 the house was in a sad state, and only ten years later it was repaired and turned into museum: artistic projects of the rooms and studio were developed. And in 1928, the Literary Memorial House Museum of Taras Shevchenko received the first visitors.

Its exposition repeatedly changed over time. The one that is available for visiting now was developed in the early 1990s and recreates the true atmosphere that reigned here during poet's stay. Museum funds have unique exhibits: Shevchenko's personal belongings, including his canvas suit and shirt from the times of poet's exile, his artistic accessories and gravers - sketchbook, copy of the easel, and etchings, autographs, photographs, early printed works. The true treasure that is kept in the Memorial Museum of Taras Shevchenko is the collection of poetry "Kobzar" with poet's inscription issued in 1860.

Shevchenko's room setting was completely recreated. Attention is focused on the desk, where memorial exhibits are displayed: poet's pen, ink pen, inkwell, coffee pot and flask. It was in this room that he composed some of the legendary ballads, ordered manuscript collection and created a series of paintings and lithographs depicting Kyiv landscape.

The small garden, where poet's contemporary tree still grows, is laid near the Literary Memorial House Museum of Taras Shevchenko. It is an integral part of the exposition, along with Shevchenko bust installed on museum's premises in 1946 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of prominent poet's stay in the Kyiv house.
